Woman friend and I are doing disability advocacy.
By Lynda Appell
When and I first Ellie *met at our then mutual apt, Christmas party little did either of us know we would be working together in the same cause. Both of us hit it off virtually immediately. From that chance encounter we became very good friends. I remember giving her emotional support during her treatment for stage2 breast cancer. That was over a dozen years ago and so far she's been free of that horrible disease. May it be the LORD's will she stay that way. Ellie in turn , years saw me through my times of difficulties too. She and I supported each other as only true friends can. Through the smooth times and the rocky ones we were there sharing our friendship. Ten or so years ago she became part of a vocational rehabilitation organization. Its located in the section of Philadelphia,PA known as University City and West Philadelphia by others. Short note: Some local individuals and the more radical organizations think the name University City a marketing ploy. Officially UC is named because its the home of University of PA and Drexel University. At the time she began being involved with the social service agency, my then hubby and I lived in nearby suburb. I joined a work place that was a branch where Ellie worked. So about two years ago when Jerry and moved to University City, I was transferred to the local branch. By this time, Ellie was promoted to being a literacy tutor and later disability advocate. A few months since I first came to the work site I was urged by the director to be part of advocacy. He knew of my years of work for various nearby mental health agencies. So here we are advocating with other mental health consumers for our rights, fighting homelessness and making certain our essential concerns are heard, taken care of. One last thing Ellie saw during 2008, Jerry and I through his struggles with acute myeloid leukemia and its treatment, hospitalizations. Tragically he didn't make it. Her support I will be forever grateful. *Not her real name. |
