What Obama needs to do in his first 90 days
By Lynda Appell of Artists for Recovery
What President Elect Obama should do in First 100 days First Barack Obama should do his best to keep his promises. His main promise is change. However change is a word that can be either negative or positive. I think the campaign realized this when the slogan was changed to "Change we can believe in" There was too the idea that Obama wanted and encouraged feedback, participation from the American people. I think he should make good on this sentiment by encouraging people to participate by exchanging ideas, suggestions for his presidency. It isn't enough to say we should be a part, he should make the goverment as accessible as possible. One thing he can do is enforce the sunshine laws. That is make the administration as open as possible without endangering national security. Barack Obama needs to reach out to the citizens and truly listen. Of course there's not enough time to hear or respond to everyone. The next president should make an honest effort to do his best to make us feel we're a part of his term(s) With the congress being predominantly Democratic keeping specific promises should be relatively easy. There will not be as much Republican opposition to deal with. There are myriad number of people who voted for Obama because of what he promised. Conversely, while I can't prove it and there are no figures, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if there were voters who voted for him, not because of what he said but because they voted against McCain. To those voters Obama needs to prove he's better than the Republican nominee for president. I say a pretty easy task. He can deal with many types of people, situations without losing his cool. How untrue of McCain. Speaking of the Republicans this gets to the next step Obama should make. He must do his utmost to reach out to every contingency. as much as humanly possible. After all he will be the next president not only for those who voted for him. His presidency will be for everybody whose a US citizen. On his campaign web site there were links for Women for Obama, People with Disabilities for Obama, Environmentalists for Obama, Jews for Obama, Senior Citizens for Obama, Hispanics for Obama. There was even Republicans for Obama. The former Democratic IL Senator said he wants to reach out to all us. In the first three months in office he should show he means this. Specifically he must concern himself with the important issues that are relevant to different segments of our US society. For example women's health care issues, the Americans with Disabilty Act, Medicare for Seniors, etc. The most crucial issue he should deal with as soon as possible is the economy. This affects the most people. In fact it's an issue worldwide. Many banks and major businesses are closing. People are losing their employment. Without earnings or govt. assistance people will lose their homes or be unable to pay their rents. There will more defaults in housing mortgages. Businesses will close if there isn't enough cash to spend. He ought to diminish our presence in Iraq as much as he can. Our next president needs to restore our constitutional rights, including Habeas Corpus, stopping illegal wire taping and other forms of domestic spying. Last but not least Obama's task is to do his best to make us proud to be Americans once more. |
