What is the origin of Santa Claus
By Lynda Appell of http://www.artistsforrecovery.com
There is no Santa Claus despite what it says in both versions of the film "Miracle on 34th Street. That is there is no jolly, plump man wearing a red suit with white fur trim. There is nobody rushing through throughout Christmas eve, delivering toys and other presents to believing girls and boys throughout the earth. If you're not strong enough to read the truth I strongly recommend you stop reading this now. If you can continue soon you'll discover the truth regarding this century's old lovable character myth. Before I let you know the reality please note the following: There are some conservative Christians who think there should be an emphasis only on the religious meaning of Christmas. They want to eliminate any mention of Santa Claus or the various names he is known throughout the world. Their thinking is Christmas is exclusively a religious Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. To me the key word here is exclusively. In my opinion this is a major mistake. For one thing children look forward to seeing that much loved worldwide gift giver. Be they know him as Santa Claus, Sinter Klass, Kris Kringle, Father Christmas etc. They get truly excited seeing decorations, newspapers, magazines, other places too numerous to mention with pictures of the lovable character. I say lets let our kids enjoy their childhood fantasies. They will be grown up soon enough. Besides they usually discover there is no such person sooner or later. Please note I am not saying this Christian holiday should be only be concerning Santa Claus. What I do mean is I don't see anything wrong with the festivities being of both Jesus Christ and Santa Claus. Despite what some Believer's opinions the origin of Santa are of a nature that touches on Christianity. There are those who believe that most famous Christmas eve world traveler is based on Saint Nicolas. The very name Santa Claus is derived from Saint Nicolas. The Santa is from Saint. Claus is nick name of Nicolas. The Polish actor Klaus Kinski's real name was Nicolas. Klaus was short for Nicolas. This is true of any boy named Nicolas throughout Eastern Europe and Germany. The man who Santa is based on was a charitable Bishop who lived in the Southern seacoast town of Myra, Turkey. He was a man who cared for his people. Specifically he did what he could to help the unfortunates. He defended his faith too. He was a good man with many grateful subjects. Over all he was a kindly man of strong belief and a man dedicated to his creed. He was known to give alms to the poor, help poor children, give Dowries so young women and men could marry. In other words he did the best he could to be of service to others. This is the origin of Santa giving gifts to boys and girls. This feature is based on the many kindly deeds performed by St.Nicolas. There is much information on who St. Nicolas was at the web site www.stnicolascenter.org. This is where most of my information originates. Here is their mission statement. "St. Nicholas Center is a virtual center, a website, where people can learn about St. Nicholas; it provides resources for families, churches, and schools" I would add learn about the real St. Nicolas.
