Using Herbals wisely.

By Lynda Appell of http://www.artistsforrecovery.com

Herbs can help treat many health conditions. Some of these arthritis, constipation, migraines, anxiety, depression, colds, coughs, and other health problems.
There are people who claim to be master herbalists who say that herbals can be successful treatments for AIDS, Cancer, Heart problems, diabetes and other serious diseases. These claims are controversial to say the least. In fact the usage of botanicals for the treatment of any health issue is of great controversy.
There is the fact that quite a few plants usage is traditional and not proven by scientific testing. Or more tests are needed to draw any real conclusions. On the other hand, thousands of years of being successfully helped by herbs is something to consider too.
I think the less major the health problem the more safe it is to utilize medicinal plants. If one is constipated, buckthorn, Cascara Sagrada, Yellow Dock are mild yet effective. Be certain not to use them too long to not become dependent on herbal laxatives.
Yucca is useful for treating arthritis. Feverfew is excellent for migraines. Boswellin is just as good as NSAIDs without the side effect of stomach irritation for
muscular and arthritic pains. Depression if its not too severe can be helped by taking St. John's Wort. There are many more examples way too numerous to mention of using botanicals for relatively minor complaints.

If you are diagnosed with a major illness I think its best to check with your doctor. If you're diagnosed with a serious ailment you need the most effective treatments.

Some conditions preclude certain herbs. Some auto immune disorders such as lupus, Hashimoto's (chronic thyroiditis), certain collegen diseases prevent you from taking alfalfa and echinacea.
Be certain the natural product you take doesn't negatively interact with your prescription or OTC drugs. The medical term for this is contraindications. Any herbal containing coumarin can not be taken if you're prescribed a blood thinner, especially Coumadin. If you suffer from liver disease a botanical that contains pyrolizidines such as borage, coltsfoot, comfrey can not be ingested.
Sometimes an herb can help with an aspect of an illness.
For example, nervines such as passionflower, betony, valarian can help with anxiety caused by serious diseases
Overall there are many conditions that can be helped by herbs. They are not for every disease. Cautions should be taken and to be on the safe side check with your doctor.
