The most popular herb you never heard of

Betal nut palm aka Betal Palm, Betal Nut, Betal Scientific name Piper Betle. It is related to black pepper.

This herb is one of the most popular mind altering drugs in the world. It is the fourth most used drug of its type. Only alcohol, caffeine and nicotine are more used.
The main reason it isn't that well known to the US and Eu. is its mainly utilized in Asia, especially S.E. Asia.

Over 200 million persons from Southeast Asia, India, Indonesia ingests betal nut palm. They do so as a regular bases, much like people in the the west chew tobacco.

The part of the plant one uses is the leaves, oil. It is a shubby vine with semi woody stems.
Its glossy aromatic leaves give off a clove like odor. It makes one salivate more. It's believed to be protective of getting intestinal parasites and fungal infections.

The plant presents with a long history of treatment for cough medicine, diptheria, headaches, itching, wounds, boils(oil). These activities not been proven by studies on humans. One study that shows some promise in human studies is betal palm for depression. Plus cholestoral lowering. It possesses many good qualities.

However there is the other side. Betal is linked to oral cancer. That is individuals who chew it on a regular basis are of high risk for cancer of the mouth. The plant contains carginogins. This is mostly the alkaloids. Alkaloids are phyto (plant) chemicals with potent uses. Examples are many addictive drugs such as opium, heroin, morphine etc. There are phenol compounds too. Its uncertain what they do.

I wrote above comparing betal leaf chewing and tobacco chewing. Its fairly well known that tobacco chewing is quite harmful. Specifically it causes oral cancers. Chewing betal nut can cause such cancers too. Like nicotine it helps with one's mood. Unfortunately, despite its good qualities, its negative, deadly ones far outweighs its benefits. It raises the risks of getting cardiovascular disease and/or diabetes two.

My personal recommendation is if you suffer from the health issues that betal may be helpful I'd strongly recommend you seek a much safer way to treat them.
