Spending one hundred dollars to save our children.
By Lynda Appell of Artists for Recovery
How I would spend one hundred dollars to better my community. First this sum of money certainly isn't much. So that being the case I would be spending it as wisely as possible. By this I mean I'd definitely emphasis quality over quantity. In other words I'd use the cash where I believe it would go the furthest. Please note this is one suggestion. I am not saying this is the only way for one hundred dollars to be used to better one's community. This happens to be my way. I'd like your opinion of it. I live in the greater Philadelphia PA area. I know the city fairly well. I wouldn't say I'm expert enough to be a tour guide. However I believe I possess enough knowledge to know how I would reach my goal here. My methodology would be to seek out museums that I believe would provide the most educational experience for the children. That is exhibits that would maximize pride, natural curiosity and critical thinking. The grades most likely would be high school. By the very nature of my proposal the grand total of sites to visit would be limited to ten. That is only locations where groups of teacher and students could get in for ten dollars or less. The one draw back is that not every museum can be visited. I would need to emphasis the most for the money. With this in mind I carefully chose what I believe where the money would do the most good. The grade would be 7th since this is a period when the mind begins to be capable of thinking critically and hopefully still young enough to be molded into better persons. The visitations would be one time only. However I would urge the teachers to plan followups. They would try their best to see that their pupils engage in what ever level they could to see what they learned from their visits. How they could imlement their learning in their future. The places chosen would be ones with the most economical group rates. In other words they would be institutions where the total sum permitted would go the furthest. The museums would be those with the most to offer. If possible I would choose the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Franklin Institute of Science museum, the Please Touch museum. No dirty minds ok? Its the official hands on museum for kids in Philly. The University of PA University museum, archeology museum, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Liberty Museum, Constitution Center, Independence Hall, Free Wagner Science Institute, Balch Institute, Atwater Kent official Philadelphia PA city museum, Afro American museum. Lastly the PA Academy of Fine Art, a permanant exhibit of US Art would be on the list since its free on Mondays. Briefly these choices would be chosen for the following reasons. The art museum would get the children to see fine works of art of other historical times and cultures. They could see some of the culture of the ethnic groups they belong to. The Science museums could open up an entire new world of the sciences. The Please Touch museum would be a first hand experience in exploring their world. The Balch Institute is a museum of immigration. The student may learn of how their ancesters came to the US and what they did to help build this great country, the US. The Penn archeology museum would emphasize history, especially ancient and different cultures. The Liberty museum and Independence Hall, US Constitution Center would illustrate our rights, freedoms, the history of when we became a free, independent nation. The Afro American museum would I am hoping instill pride in African Americam girls and boys by showing what other African Americans did to better themselves and the US. Please note I wouldn't suggest seeing every place in one day. Only one museum for every two weeks. This is so the boys and girls could spend some time with some followup. The children could see there is a whole world out there beyond their immediate neighborhood. They would see how they could better their circumstances. The tours I am hoping would instill hope. The experience would I am hoping be an inspiration to every child who participated. The 7th grade class would be chosen by lottery. In this way no favoritism, politics or any kind of bias would be eliminated. I think this would be fairest way to choose. Then if the program is successful then hopefully the following year, more money could be funded for more schools. Its true Philadephia is suffering from a major budget crunch with many libraries, fire engine stations, recreation centers being closed. However I think especially in light of libraries being eliminated I believe there is an even greater need for educational probrams for the children, the future of Philadelphia. Lastly I would present this idea of being visitors to major museums to other cities so this idea could spread to reach more and more children. This would be the pilot program. |
