Respect for the US National Anthem

By Lynda Kohn

Brief background and respect for the US National Anthem,
It is known as the Star Spangled Banner. It was written during the war of 1812 by Francis Scott Key. The location is Baltimore MD. One can visit a memorial there. It is specifically Fort McHenry. Its melody is based on an old British drinking song. That song with obviously more relevant lyrics became the UK national anthem. The UK national anthem and the US both have the exact same musical composition.

The main point of my writing is not the history of the US Anthem.. What I am writing now is the importance of respect for our national anthem. This is nothing to do with one’s politics.b It doesn’t matter if an American is a Democrat or a Republican, a Conservative, a Liberal, a Moderate or even a Radical. Or for that matter if an American is apolitical. The US National Anthem is totally beyond politics. The song is for every American and every potential legal citizen. It is something that should be respected because it is a representation of our nation. It reminds us that the US was fought by brave men and women who gave their lives to for the survival of the USA. It is for every one of us.

Personally I believe politics should never be correlated with the Star Bangled Banner. It should be respected by everybody who hears it. This doesn’t mean that one must like the melody, However the words regarding our flag is to remind us that we are the land of the free and the home of the brave. That one of the best qualities of the US is freedom. That is what our anthem represents. It celebrates our reserve to fight for our country. That is to preserve our freedoms.

No matter what one thinks of what ever issue is current one should show respect for the Star Spangled Banner. Its only right to stand unless if that’s physically impossible. Being in a wheel chair or in any other way crippled, on crutches, or truly too fatigued are to me, the only exceptions. My earliest memories of the F.S. Key song was standing in elementary school assembly every Wednesday. Don’t ask me how long ago that was loll. I remember even back then the importance of listening to the lyrics. How meaningful, how stirring they were even then.

There’s been some controversy in the past how the song glorifies war. That the Woody Guthrie song “This land is my land, This land is your land. A different contender suggested is “America the Beautiful.” I am not here to discuss the pros and cons of these suggestions for the US national anthem. I believe the point is a national anthem for virtually every country is to instill pride in its citizens. To remind them to feel proud of where they are living. It is, in my humble opinion, to help keep in one’s soul, mind, heart to love the country where they are living.

One criticism of the Star Spangled Banner is that is is very difficult to sing even for a professional singer. Some years ago the comedy writer, comic, actress Rosanne Barr strangled the Bangle with her way off key singing and voice that was a cross between a Perhaps she meant well. However her performance sounded really disrespectful. I proposed that from now on only professional singers who can sing the anthem should sing it in public events. This definitely includes sporting events.

I like it Lynda. Respect for the anthem... But many people don't have that respect unfortunately.

I disagree. The Nazis made a lot of their national anthem too. All too often 'patriotism', in Samuel Johnson's words 'is the last refuge of a scoundrel.'
