Phila,PA man wrote South Street
Dave Appell wrote South Street in the early 60s for the Cameo Parkway group The Orlons. They were named that as the companion group, at least name wise, to the Dovels. The Dovels were originally named the Cashmeres. It isn't true the Orlons were named as such because the man who named them that was into orlon. Cameo Parkway was owned and managed by Bernie Lowe, (Bernard Lowenthal) Kal Mann, (Kalman Cohen) and Dave Appell were the main men behind the record company. For more info go to www. daveappell.com You'll find a very informative, cool site. Oh yeah please sign the Guestbook too. More information on the song South Street. My father and his writer partner-friend Kal Mann thought that many teenagers could identify with the title. They figured this base on the with both NYC, NY and PA including a South Street millions of teens could relate to the song's name. Where my father was born and raised, Philadelphia PA there is a South Street. It is a very colorful, post hippy neighborhood. In the early 60s when the song was written it was a haven for Philly hippies. There is a South Port in NYC. The melody itself is based on Stephen Foster's Camp Town Races. However since this song was written so long ago its considered public domain. The fact is no copyright laws were violated this way. The song is still going strong. "Where do all the hippies meet. South Street, South Street."
