My tribute to Elvis Presley
By Lynda Kohn
Elvis Aaron Presley was born January 8th, 1935 in Tupelo Ms His mother and father were dirt poor sharecroppers. His twin brother was still born. Elvis Presley recorded eighteen number one records in the US. Plus over a hundred of his recordings went gold internationally. His music basically combined black rhythm and blues with white hillbilly, country music. His former manager Sam Phillips was seeking a young white man who could sing black. He found that combination in Presely. Virtually whatever he sang he sang it with joyousness and amuch feeling. It was one of the closest times a Caucasian got to singing with soul. He was the most popular singer until the Beatles toppled him in the mid 60s. However hee was still very well liked by his millions of fans throughout his life. His main manager was Colonel Tom Parker made him star in many mediocre motion pictures. Not only where these pictures pretty terrible they help prevent Presley from participating in the popular music trends. Plus the two years in the army didn't help much in promoting his musical career either. The first recording firm that recorded him was Sun. Sun recorded other Rockabilly artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. The latter first recorded "Blue Suede Shoes" Elvis was second. Rockabilly is a combination of rock and roll and country music. The fact is none of Elvis's songs were original. From his very first "That's Alright Mama" to his last. That's Alright Mama was first sung by Black Blues singer Arthur Crudup in the late forties. One of Presley's early fifties recordings was "Milk Cow Blues" This was originally a hit for Kokomo Arnold a negro blues singer in the mid thirties. What Elvis did was to infuse new life in these songs so they sound practically fresh. It was his quality singing, interpretation that was important. Most of his recordings however were under the management of RCA Victor. He moved to that company in 1956 with the song "Heartbreak Hotel." This was a huge hit. It was s top smash in the rock and roll, rhythm and blues and jazz charts. There is a rumor it is based on a suicide note. Presley was a favorite of former president Bill Clinton. I wonder if his fave song was "Treat me Nice." lol. In the last years of his life his concentration was on a live show in Las Vegas. He was known for his tight white rhinestone studded jumpsuit outfits. One of the songs of this period was "In the Ghetto" written by Mac Davis. The Tupelo Ms vocalist music education was mostly in his Babtist church where he heard gospel and his African American neighbors where he learned R&B and singing with deep emotion too.

This is a real nice tribute to Elvis. I was born the same year as he was and had the pleasure of his music for many years, including today. Thank you for sharing this with us and bringing back the memories. Frederick
I am always confused about whether Elvis' story is a happy one or a sad one.
