My review of the film "Big Fish"
By Lynda Kohn
My review of "Big Fish" Director Tim Burton. Released 2003. IMDB.com viewer rating 8.0 out of 10.00. Cast Albert Finney, Ewen McGregor, Billy Crudup, Marianne Cotilard, Danny DeVito, Mathew McGrory, Steve Buscemi Plot Panoramic flashback of Albert Finney of his life story. His greatly exaggerated life story. Albert Finney plays Ed Bloom, senior. Ewen McGreggor portrays the much younger man. The movie is mostly one grand flashback. And grand the motion picture certainly is. Billy Crudup is Will Bloom. He is Ed Bloom's son. Jessica Lange. Marianne Cottilard Josephine Bloom, daughter. Sarah Bloom, senior. Helena Bottom Carter three roles, Jennie both young and senior and a witch. Robert Guillaume Dr. Bennett - Senior, Mariane Cottilard Josephine Bloom Steve Buscemi Norther Winslow, Town Laurette, Bank Robber. Danny DiVito Circus master. His son seeks out the truth of what his father was really like, warts and all. Includes some quite quirky characters such as Danny DeVito circus ringmaster. Mathew McGrory Circus giant. Tai sisters, conjoined twins singers. Steve Buscemi poet laurette, bank robber. The themes are life story , finding true love, adventure. Big Fish is basically a flashback starting with Ed Bloom's son and wife being told oncologist ordered stopping chemo. The movie then begins literally from the birth of Ed Bloom. To me its a funny, quirky scene. The baby boy is born with such force from his mother's pushing he literally leaps out of her uterus and slides the entire length of the maternity ward floor. From that auspicious beginning the viewer knows this is no ordinary life and likewise no conventional albeit fictional biographical film. It is a series of vignettes that tell a panoramic episodic life of one true romantic, larger than life hero Ed Bloom. Director Tim Burton tells the story of Ed Bloom in a colorful film that runs the gamut of pathos, humor and quirkiness. Next are Ed Bloom's teen years. This is one moderately long scene where he is bedridden in some contraption so his bones will set properly. He encounters a truly gentle giant played by Mathew McGrory. While McGrory was 7'6 the camera angles makes him look even taller. Even so in real life the man was already five feet when he was five years old. Next Edward Bloom meets up with the town poet laurette,Steve Buscemi There is a very funny scene where a poem Buscemi's character is only three lines in length. This is from three years of working on it. Two of the lines are roses are red. Violets are blue. I don't believe in real life he'd be much competition for other poets. The episodic picture of Edward Bloom happening to discover his true love at a circus. A demure teen small town girl. He knows very little of her. He is dependent on the circus master played by Danny DeVito. Finally from the tiny clues, Blooms finds his love. What happens next is the heart of the picture. If I wrote what happened next I'd need to write spoiler alert. I just want to write its a very emotionally moving scene. The motion picture is mostly set pieces that are quite entertaining on their own. Yet are part of an overall consistently engrossing pictures. It comes with characters that can relate to on many levels. The set pieces from the beautiful sexy glam Oriental conjoined singing sisters to the poet laureate turned bank robber Norther Winslow, the motion picture is a delight to a discrimination, discerning person wanting to enjoy a picture larger than life but still with heart. One last note one of the actresses is the very in French actress Marianne Cotillard who is starring in director James Gray's motion picture "Low Life" being filmed currently in New York City.
