Most dog breeds started out as mixed breeds.

By Lynda Kohn

Many people turn their noses up at mixed breeds. Conversely it seems the latest trend in dogs are the designer breeds. I remember when these were known as mutts. Now dogs of this type as seen as deliberate breeding of two different breeds to create a new breed.
Well designer dogs arn't new. The fact is there was a poodle type back in the late nineteenth century in Germany It was known as the Pudelpointer. It originated in Germany. It was and is basically a cross between a standard poodle and a German type of Pointer. It is a dog good for people with dog dander allergies and an excellent hunting dog as well. This dog is still in existence.
The major difference between this designer dog and the contemporary ones is the combination was done for pragmatic reasons.
Currently designer dogs are created mainly for looks and/or personality. Some of the more popular ones are the various poodle mixes including Labrodoodles, Goldendoodles, Yorkipoos, Cockapoos. These are Labroador Retriever and poodl, Golden Retriever and Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers and Poodles, Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mixes. Some other designer dogs are Zuchons, Bichons and Tzi Shus, Cockaliers, Cocker Spaniels and Cavalier Spaniels, Bullneses, English bulldog and Pekineses. Plus the Catahoula Bull Dog, a combining of the American Bull Dog and the Catahoula.
You may sneer at mixed breeds. However the truth is many of today's recognized breeds are basically standarized mixed breeds. The canine recognition groups I include are the FCI ( Federation Canine International) Virtually every nation's canine registry belongs to the FCI including the AKC, The UKC and BKC. These are the American Kennel Club, The United Kennel Club and the British Kennel Club. I am most familiar with these clubs.
Some examples are Belgian Griffon aka the Brussels Griffon and the closely related Brabacon. The canine ancesters of this breed include the Affenpinsher, Dutch Smoushund (terrier) and the pug. Boston Terrier's ancesters are the Old Boston Bull dog, the French Bull dog, the White Terrier. The Lakeland Terrier is the result of Bedlington Terrier, Border Terrier, Dandi Dimont Terrier. The English Pointer sncester's may the English Greyhound, bloodhounds, and foxhounds. Great Dane's aka German Mastiffs are essentially mastif and sighthound mixes.
There are many more canine breeds too. None of these breeds are new. They are well established accepted dog breeds. The fact is many dogs were once mixed breeds.
