Introduction to Amulets and how they work.
By Lynda Kohn
Basic introduction to amulets. First let's begin with the definition of an amulet. The Oxford American Desk Dictionary and Thesaurus states an amulet is a charm to protect against negativity, negative doings, feelings. Please note this is a paraphrase. However I didn't change in any way, the meaning. It is a talisman, a piece that is supposed to bring good luck, good fortune. I see that by my source an amulet and a talisman are synonyms. The effectiveness of an amulet or talisman is the belief one puts into it. It is the power of belief that makes it in any way effective. What I mean is what ever significance it carries is because the wearer believes in its power. It is suggestion that makes it effective. The justification for magick symbols, including amulets was/is to for the wearer to focus on its influence to who ever was wearing it. That is it's using one's faith, one's belief in the object. Amulets are simply using one's belief system or faith in the object's mission. . There is a form of religion called Animism. It can be a seperate creed or part of other creeds. There is a bit of animism when people carry Rabbit Foot's, A right side up horseshoe, a four leaf clover if extremely fortunate enough to find one. It is concentrating on the thing itself. The aim of amulets, talismans is to eliminate or greatly reduce fear and anxiety. It is putting one's faith in an object instead of the emphasis on a supreme being. In other words faith in the creation and not the creator. The word amulet is derived from the Latin amuletum. The ancient Roman writer Pliny described an amuletum as "an object that protects a person from trouble." Presently one would say an object manmade or natural. As I wrote earlier it isn't so much the object its the faith in the object that makes it a good luck charm, a protector. There are people who say that these act as psychological aids to the wearer, user. Amulets can be natural or man made. They can be of ancient Egyptian, Gnostic, Astrological and many more designs, cultures too numerous to mention here. They can be of precious and semiprecious crystals. Some of these stones include bloodstone, green jasper, carnelian, onyx, lapis, rose quartz, emeralds, diamonds, saphires, others. Each gemstone comes with its own healing, protective properties. Religious amulets are seen to be protecting of health, warding off maleovalance and of general healing. Some are seen as being of planetary influence. Virtually any herbal can be an amulet. A brief listing includes acorn, alfalfa, anise, bay leaves, buckeye, caraway, cascara, clover, especially four leaf, cloves, coriander, damiana, dandilion, Eyebright, Eucalyptus, fennel, lavender, mandrake, mistletoe, mugwort, orange blossom, Orris root (Blue Flag), Peony, primrose and many more herbs. This article is a basic introduction to amulets. For specific traditional properties of crystals, herbs etc I strongly recommend Complete Book of Amulets and Talismans by Migene Gonzalez-Wippler. Science editor at the American Museum of Natural History. Lastly the charms of a little girl or young woman's charm bracelet can be considered amulets too. Amulets can be seen too as a way to help control our environment and even our fates. They give their users a sense of control. This may be psychological, only suggestion. On the other hand placebos work by the power of suggestion too. There is a case of a woman in her mid thirties with stage two breast cancer. I'm not an oncologist. However I do know with any cancerous malignancy, the higher the stage, the more difficult to treat and less chance of survival. The one exception to staging are the leukemias. Well this woman went to a lecture to hear Bernie Siegel MD. The oncology physician who wrote "Love, Medicine and Miracles." It is my belief a miracle occured there. Once he finished speaking, the people there came up to him. This woman met him one on one. He gave her a great big, ressuring hug. She hugged him back. The next week, the doctors treating her for her breast cancer did a complete bone scan. If you're unfamilier with this procedure. It checks for any sign of cancer from one's head to one's toes. Well the result was she was CANCER FREE!!!! There she was at the talk stage two breast cancer. No treatment given. Only a hug. Then the bone scan says she's CANCER FREE. You might say I read this in some overly optimistic New Age book. No I didn't. I know this woman. One of my dearest female friends knows this woman too. We can tell you this really happened precisely as I wrote it. My point is amulets work by suggestion and suggestion can be powerful. So the justification of an amulet is not in the piece itself. It is in the belief system of the user. Be it a crystal, a Hexagram of Solomon, an Eye of Horus, or what ever it is, its effectiveness is linked with mind. The power is in the mind of the one using the amulet. Please note I am not implying the power of the mind is infinite and is a guarantee of effectiveness. What I am saying is the mind is very potent, much more so than most people think it is. The mind can be a powerful too for manifestesting what one wants and needs. |
