Introduced, at the age of ten, to the paintings of French 19th century painter Toulouse Lautrec

By Lynda Appell of Chestnut Place Disability Advocacy

I was first introduced to the paintings of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec by my uncle Ray. I was ten years old. There's been a keen interest in drawing ever since I can remember. One of my earliest subject matters was dinosaurs. I recall getting books from my parents on birds of the world, mammels of the world and reptiles of the world. Yet for all the art I did I never saw the work of famous artists.
That changed when my uncle showed me some of the paintings of Toulouse Lautrec. Once I saw the late 19th century French painter's artistic view of Parisian night life I became keenly interested knowing more of him and his art.

In retrospect it seems strang my mother's cousin would choose the crippled dwarf painter as my first artist. The painter's subject matter was rather mature for a child. He painted mostly prostitutes and other quite less than exemplelary examples of French society.

I never did then, nor now ever think my relative was ever abusing me in any way. I believe he honestly liked the honesty of Toulouse-Lautrec. In retrospect I presume he was showing me how important being true to one's sense of integrity is in doing art.

For no matter who and what ever their status in society, was , Toulouse Lautrec painted people as individuals who
made no apologies who they were. They were who they were and that was that. He didn't make judgements regarding their social status or lack of it. He depicted them as they were with complete truthfulness.

For the record, The late 19th century artist designed wonderfully expressive posters for various French firms too. Please note I wrote my uncle even though he was my mother's first cousin. When I was little I knew him as my uncle so I tend to think of him as that way.
