How to successfully brew herbal tea.
By Lynda Appell
Please note this is a general article. It is not about any specific herbal tea. What I write here goes for virtually every herb tea that one brews. First thing to do is know what part of the plant one is using. This is quite important since this will decide how the concoction is made. There are two main types of making an herbal tea. These types depend on what part of the herb one is utilizing. There are infusions and there are decoctions. The former is if you are using the softer parts of a plant such as flowers, leaves and other aerial parts. The latter is for if the ingredients call for roots, bark, harder parts. Infusions is what most people think of when brewing herbal teas. It is a gentle simmering for a few minutes with the ingredient and hot water. Infusion is same as immersion. Decoction takes a bit longer then infusions. It is for harder parts of the herb. It is for roots, barks, parts that take much longer to disolve in hot water. The result is an herbal that's greatly concentrated. That is a strong flavor, sometimes pungent smell. Next one must decide what the herb tea formula is for. The next step is the purchase of the ingedients. I think the best places to buy are herb stores. This is because they specialize in these products. They usually sell the freshest ingrediets too. Plus you can ask questions if you're uncertain of what to do. In Phila,PA the forms are cut and powdered. The latter are somwhat more costy but are much easier for brewing. The bags come in at the smallest one ounce. At least that's how they are sold in the city of sisterly and brotherly love. Basically a simple combination is the main ingredient. Next two or three herbs complementing the main herb. It would make the tea more pleasant to drink if at least ne botanical would be used for flavoring. Important. The exception would be an herb tea for a laxative and/or a detoxifier. These contain herbs that can cause painful abdominal gripping. It is crucial one includes gentel herbs that counteract this effect. Examples are peppermint, cinnomon, fennel and more. Well there it is. Brew based on what part of the herb is used. Decide what the tea is for and then decide on what herbs are needed. These are general instructions for the vast majority of herbal teas. Decide what herbs are used. What part of the plant they come from and the purpose for the herbal tea. |
