Health Care The other side of hypochondria.
By Lynda Kohn of Chestnut Place clubhouse
While I do imagine people who are hypochondriacs are real pains in the butts for physicians there is the other side of the coin. Its certainly true that physicians, be they be MDs, DOs, NDs (naturopathic doctors , herbalist or whatever modaility, waste precious time listening to people with either little or nothing wrong with them. Time that could be spent with patients with something truly in need of their services. There is a flip side to the issue. That is health care professionals who are too ready to dismiss health consumers with valid health concerns. Its probably much more likely the health consumer will be exhibiting hypochondria. However what if the person really does present with something truly wrong with them? I mean other than hypochndria which is technically speaking a pyshcological disorder and therefore a health condition in itself. Is it right or fair to dismiss even one individual who may really be seriously sick? What if the health care practitioner is wrong in her or his medical conclusion. My aunt came to her primary with terribly itchy skin. He told her not to worry. It was merely a dermatological condition. Well somehow she went to a second MD for a different opinion. It turned out her severe itchiness was a symptom of T Cell Non Hodgkins. What if she only listened to her primary? Even medical doctors can be guilty of dismissing symptoms. I knew of a board certified internist who was suffering from extreme gastro intestinal discomfort. She self diagnosed the problem as parasites. Well it was colon cancer. Even doctors can misjudge symptoms. Hypochondria can be bothersome, hypochondriacs nuisances but being too quick to conclude nothing is seriously wrong can produce dire consequences. I know of many examples where doctors were too quick to jump to conclusions and presume their patients were being hypochondriacs.

I agree, sometimes Doctors are too quick to dismiss patient's symtoms, as in my case, I almost died before being diagnosed with "severe hypothyroidism". The evening of my admittance into hospital my heart stopped twice. Needless to say, upon recovering, I found myself a different Doctor.
