Fond memories of Valley Green

By Lynda Appell

The park I choose to write on is Fairmont Park in Philadelphia,PA. I will write of the park and some of my fond memories of it. It is if not the largest, one of the most spacious parks in the United States. One reason for this fact is the city of Brotherly and may I say, sisterly love, counts virtually every space that's a park as part of the Fairmont park system. So the result is if its considered a park, its part of Fairmont park.
I am not going to tell about this entire park system. I will only highlight a certain section of it.
This part is located in the Northwestern corner of the park. It is known as Valley Green. It is so named because of the restaurant, Valley Green located there. This is a dining establishment that for me, is a special occasion eatery. That is I would only be eating there for a holiday, birthday, anniversary or a simular occasion.
It consists of rugged wooden furniture, pleasant wait service and serves enjoyable fine cuisine of sophisticated American foods, including delicious posh deserts.
I recall one time dining there after a memorial service for
a dear sweet woman who passed from breast cancer in her sixties. She was a a psychiatric nurse who was a crusader for better care for people with mental illness. She was a member in good standing of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI). This is the largest mental health consumer group in the US. In fact they started the term consumer for people with psychiatric diagnosises. Mental health consumer is their term.
We missed her dearly but the many men and women who knew her, thought the rustic charm, plus the delicious well prepared food was a fine tribute to her. I recall my order of Salad Nicoise with its fresh tuna, black olives, red peppers was superb.
For the record there is a much more reasonable snack bar near by. This is where members of a social activity group and I usually ate at.
It serves mostly cold and hot sandwiches, soft drinks, frozen deserts, pastry that is reasonabley priced and that most people can easily purchase.
Every year this group takes a trip to the Valley Green area of Fairmont Park.
It is where some of us go hiking. There are mainly two trails. These are not the official names. They were unofficially named by Jerry. He was a member of the social acitivity group. I am uncertain if there were official names. At any rate, the terms he used were the sissy trail and the hero trail. The former was for people who didn't like or couldn't withstand the rugged trails of the hero trail. The hero trail consisted of some quite steep hills, somewhat rough terrain and was especially trecherous during icy winter days.
The sissy trail was much more popular for the hikers in the group we were members of. It wasn't that we were wimps. It was we weren't exactly athletes either.
There is a second organization with ties to Valley Green. This is the Wanderlust club. This is basically a hiking club. Their hikes were all over the city of Phila, PA and suburbs. So it was far from only Fairmont where they hiked. They meet every saturday. It is as informal as one can get. There are no calls made, reservations. Members show up for the walk or they don't. If not enough members show up, the walk's cancelled
There were times where Jerry was the only member to show up. The walks are never effected b the weather. Either people show up or they don't. The walks in Valley Green were mostly done by the Hero's trail.
So looking back in retrospect, memorial services, social activity, hiking clubs, each one of these bring back fond memories of Valley Green, Fairmont Park.
