Comic Ernie Kovacs was in the Navy with my father.

First I present a little background. This is for those of you who are unfamiliar with Ernie Kovacs. The man was a witty, hilarious, pioneering comic genius of the earliest days of television. I am referring to the early fifties.
This was the time when every TV show was in black and white.
It was when the sets were rather small.
The king of the small screen in those days was the quite unsubtle, frequent cross dresser, joke stealer, Milton Berle.

A complete antithesis of Berle was relevatively cerebral yet still goofy, Ernie Kovacs. He started out with a local show in Philadelphia,PA. Believe it or not there were no sponsors for it. Wow how primitive you can get. It was on the local version of the National Broadcasters Assn or NBC.

The reason I know there was no sponsor is one of the musicians who was a regular on the show told me. He happens to be my father, Dave Appell. He later became a song writer-executive at Cameo Parkway. Years later he was part of Warner Bros.
His site is at http://www.daveappell.com

The name of Dave Appell's band was Dave Appell and the Applejacks. You can find out more at www.imdb.com under the name David Appell.

Dave got his start by coincedence. It you believe C.G.Jung then it was synchroncity. Synchronicity is a seemingly random occurance that in reality is anything but random.

At any rate, Kovacs and my father were in the same Navy unit in a Navy base near Philadelphia,PA. This was in the late 40s. That was where they met and became both good friends and professional colleagues.
In one of the family albums there are photographs of Mr Kovaks, his wife, Edie Adams, and my father clowning it up.
