Be careful in underestimating possibilities
By Lynda Kohn
Qondio Quiz Urban Legend Professor and the Transom. This is as far as I can tell an Urban Legend. In other words there is no known proof it ever happened. However I am writing about it because I believe it teaches a signicant lesson. In case you are unfamiliar with the word, a transom is a a horizontal bar of either wood or stone that is across a window or top of door. My source is Oxford American Dictionary. There are many versions of this tale. It takes place in quite a few locations and institutions of higher learning. Here is one version. In this one the place is Mississippi State University. There one of the professors states he will give a quiz as much as he is likely to crawl through the transom on top of the door in the classroom. In other words it would be most unlikely he would be quizzing his pupils any time soon. The students felt reassured and relieved there would be no quizzes any time soon. The very next day there was an enormous commotion, loud noises, and much clamoring. The young men and young women could barely believe their eyes. The transom was somehow giving way. The next thing they knew was the professor was climbing through the structure with a quiz in his hand. The undergraduates groan but they realize the man teaching them was true to his word. In one version the pupils lock the professor out and the only way into the class is through the transom. The proff is a former circus acrobat. Guy Williams who taught at OK State is claimed to do this stunt. Plus Guy Harrison of Baylor University, TX boasted he did the same thing. None of these tales were ever, as far as I know, ever substantiated. Its extremely doubtful this really occurred. However I believe it teaches the importance of never presuming, unless its truly physically impossible , that an event will never occur. To take nothing for granted and to consistently be prepared,

Very good, Lynda. One must never be overly presumptuous, and recognize the possibilities both positive and negative. One must be prepared as much as possible for any eventuality. Stuff happens... Regards, Jim
Thank you for sharing this very interesting lesson, Lynda. Expect the unexpected is a good watchword. Best wishes, Frederick
