Assault weapons at public rallies.

By Lynda Kohn

Guns, particularly automatic weapons at health care rallies.
Whatever one thinks of carrying guns I can't see taking assault aka semi-automatic weapons anywhere. This is especially true at public rallies. There's been quite a few photographs of mostly young men with such weapons at Health Care rallies. There they were looking so nonchalant as they held their
These pictures were seen in such public meetings in New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, other states. My reliable information resources, ie United Press International and Associated Press, showed these mostly young men with these weapons. I suspect they are right wing since one of the main tenants of conservatism is a strong emphasis on the US 2nd amendment. This is the one that includes the right to bear arms. It was to be for US citizens to arm themselves for self protection. It wasn't for intimidating others. They are avid supporters of the National Rifle Association. One was a young black man who looked to be at most to be in his mid 30s. On the other hand looks can be deceiving. I am not implying African American males are in the habit of bringing with them such semi-automatic rifles.
They didn't look particularly threatening in their facial expressions. Then again it was former president Theodore Roosevelt who said "Speak softly and carry a big stick." It wasn't as if they threatened anybody. Their guns were enough to threaten others who were there. So what was the problem? For one thing what if the semi-automatic rifle went off inadvertently, killing innocent bystanders? What is the rationale of bringing such rifles anywhere where the public is? What is the justification for posessing these assault weapons? What is the rationale for assault weapons in the hands of private citizens? Does one really need to use them? If one genuinely feels that they need protection wouldn't a hand gun be enough? I think too, that one needs to be absolutely certain its a self defense case. I personally am not for killing, even in self defense. I believe in defending oneself. However I think shooting somebody should be the absolute last resort. My belief is one should if at all possible try non lethal ways first. Plus if one is holding a gun the criminal could take it away and use it on the individual. It is the job of the police to protect us. Its not a do it yourself. Safety officers are trained to use guns for protection. While its true there is certainly police corruption, that doesn't justify private persons using automatic weapons for self defense or for what ever for that matter.
What galls me is unless, the law was changed recently, its completely legal to carry assault weapons at rallies, other public gatherings. This is true even when the president of the president of the United States is there. Please note this editorial is nothing to do with Obama. This law is true of whoever is the executive leader of the United States of America. I know the chief executive is suppose to be protected by the Secret Service but really?

These rallies may be in the past. However this doesn't mean there won't be such incidents at other rallies or for that matter different public events. No matter what is being protested, or for that matter, what ever happens there is no reason to bring an assualt weapon. One final note while Americans do possess the right to bear arms. What about the right to arm bears. lol.
Seriously my topic is a very serious matter.

I find this comment interesting.

Considering that we are talking about New Mexico, Arizona, Texas did it ever occur to you that these individuals might be involved in the drug trafficking from Mexico?

I would like to see the photographs you are referring to.

Sorry for being so late I'm recuperating from extreme stress due to a suspicious mammogram. BTW It turned out benign.
What a relief.
No it didn't occur to me. Maybe it should. Well nobody can think of everything. OTOH I don't want to presume either.
Being that they are tea party members I doubt it.
